ALL ABOUT MOONSTONES - THE STONE OF NEW BEGINNINGS

HOW TO TELL IF THE MOONSTONE IS REAL AND WHY DOESN'T MY MOONSTONE DISPLAY THE BLUE FLASH ALL THE TIME FROM EVERY ANGLE?

To see the blue flash in Moonstone clearly, look at it in natural light instead of artificial light. Pictures taken indoors or from awkward angles may not show this effect well. When you hold the stone toward a window with good natural light, the blue flash looks bright and clear. If the light comes from behind the stone, it won’t reflect properly and the blue flash will be harder to see.

If you're new to collecting Moonstones, you may be unsure about the differences. Moonstone displays a blue flash when viewed against light; the best way to see this is to hold it facing a window. If a moonstone is intensely blue and the color is visible from all angles, in that case, it may either be fake (made of colored glass, often made in China), or it could belong to the 5A category, which typically sells for over $1,000 for a medium-sized stone. Natural Moonstones cannot refract the light at an angle greater than 15 degrees.

Moonstone quality is graded from 1A to 5A, with 1A being the lowest quality—characterized by black inclusions—and 5A being the highest, often set in solid gold. At Veatge, we use a grading of 3A for our Moonstone, which is the standard used by most jewelers on the market, typically paired with sterling silver.
