how to clean gemstone jewelry at home

Over time, regular wear and tear can make your gemstones appear dull and cloudy. This cloudiness results from dirt, grease, and other buildup underneath the gemstone that can be easily removed with simple dish soap.

Here's an easy way to clean your gemstone jewelry at home

All you need is some water (filtered), a soft-bristled toothbrush (we recommend cute baby toothbrushes), mild soap, and your jewelry. Make sure to avoid any hard bristled brushes that scratch the stone. Soak your jewelry for 5 minute or less, take some soap on the brush, and start scrubbing gently. Scrub lightly under the prongs and underneath the setting to remove the cloudy layer that has coated the gemstone, making it dull. Clean under fresh water and dry. Finish by polishing with our Veatge polishing cloth.

Can I use ultrasonic cleaners to clean my gemstone rings?

While ultrasonic cleaners are ideal for your Diamond rings, it may not be suitable for all gemstones, especially gems that rank low on the MOHS scale, also known as Gemstone Hardness Scale. Ultrasonic cleaners can loosen diamonds and other gemstones in their settings due to the vibrations, particularly in delicate or loose settings. For delicate or treated stones, it may be best to consider professional cleaning.

Here's the list of gemstones that don't go in ultrasonic cleaner -> Opal, Pearls, Moonstone, Onyx, Peridot, Topaz, Turquoise, Carnelian, and even Emeralds. These delicate gemstones rank lower on the MOHS (gemstone hardness) scale.

You can determine a gemstone's durability by referring to the Mohs hardness scale, which rates each stone on a scale from 1 (the softest) to 10 (the hardest). Softer gemstones and organic materials with a lower ranking may not withstand the power of an ultrasonic cleaner; the vibrations could cause the gemstones to chip, crack, or break. Additionally, the cleaning solution used in the ultrasonic cleaner may harm soft gemstones, leading to discoloration or other damage.
